Previously we’ve seen Yildiray Cinar’s renditions of The New 52 Firestorm, the Elemental Firestorm, and the Brightest Day Firestorm. Now check out this super-cool sketch of the classic Firestorm!

Yildiray posted this to Twitter sometime last year. Sorry I’ve lost track of the details, but I believe this was a convention sketch someone commissioned. Great job by Yildiray on the classic Firestorm costume! I’d love to see more of these!

Custom Mego Firestorm Action Figure Box

I don’t know much about this custom Mego action figure box, other than it’s AWESOME! It was posted by “The Toyroom” on the Mego Museum forum. The artwork was taken from Tom Fleming’s painting. What a clever and gorgeous custom piece! Click the image to enlarge.

Darryl Banks Firestorm drawings

I’m a HUGE fan of the Kyle Rayner era of Green Lantern, and artist Darryl Banks is synonymous with those issues. Darryl draws everything great! He recently posted this Firestorm/Killer Frost artwork on Facebook. The drawing was done in 2010 and the incredibly-detailed background represents Coney Island. Such amazing work! The detail on each character and the background is fantastic! I especially like the blasts of nuclear energy and icy power! My thanks to match-head A.j. Chwaster for letting me know about this gorgeous piece!

This next Darryl Banks piece was drawn for Roland Reedy back in 2002. Personally I love the joyous expression on Firestorm’s face and the crackling energy! Fun drawing!

Here is one final Darryl Banks drawing of Firestorm. This was done in 2005 for Robert Pozzi. My only issue with this drawing is it identifies Robert as Firestorm’s biggest fan. Ahem, really?!?!?

Putting Out the Flame of Firestorm

Who can put out the flame of Firestorm? Killer Frost, that’s who! Check out this page from Killer Frost’s first appearance, Firestorm #3 (May 1978), by Gerry Conway, Al Milgrom, and Bob Mcleod. Take a close look at the middle panels. Once Firestorm freezes up, you can see Ronnie’s hair!

I could be wrong, but I believe this is the only time we see normal hair on Firestorm. A fun gem from the formative days of our favorite Nuclear Man!

Super Heroes Have Issues Too t-shirt

Fellow match-head Patrick Wait recently spotted this humorous t-shirt at Kohl’s. You can also order it from My Tee Spot.

It’s hard to make out the design from the image above, so I found this other image online. Apparently they don’t make the white version anymore, but the design is essentially the same as the purple one above.

Firestorm in Captain Atom #2 (April 1987)

Our good buddy Frank from the Power of the Atom blog was kind enough to send us today’s scans! These come from Captain Atom #2 (April 1987) and were penciled by legendary Firestorm artist Pat Broderick! Story by Cary Bates and inks by Bob Smith.

Jenette Kahn talks about Firestorm’s creation

Today we’re piloting the Wayback Machine to November 21, 1977, exactly two weeks before the first appearance of our favorite Nuclear Man in Firestorm #1. On this fortnight before Firestorm’s debut, Teen Titans #53 hit the stands. This particular issue is probably best known for featuring the end of the original Teen Titans. However, also worth noting in this comic was an interesting editorial (or in this case “Publishorial”) from Jenette Kahn, the Publisher of DC Comics at the time.

In this article, Jenette reveals quite a bit about the soon-to-appear Firestorm, as well as his alter-egos Ronnie Raymond and Professor Charles (?!?!) Stein. She then goes on to explain the creative process in developing new characters. It’s a very interesting piece and was probably very enlightening for the fans at the time. Unusual Suspects: Darkseid versus Firestorm

When you think of Firestorm foes, characters that typically come to mind include: Killer Frost, Multiplex, Hyena, Typhoon, Plastique, Deathstorm, or maybe even Slipknot. However, in Firestorm’s 34 years he’s faced quite a few other foes. Today we’re starting a new semi-regular feature looking at some of Firestorm’s more unusual opponents. Welcome to the first installment of what I like to call — UNUSUAL SUSPECTS!

Right out of the gate I wanted to tackle one of DC’s biggest, baddest villains of all – DARKSEID! Believe it or not, Firestorm has gone toe-to-toe with Darkseid on a few occasions and somehow managed to survive!

First up is a scene from Justice League of America #185 (Dec 1980) written by Gerry Conway and drawn by George Perez & Frank McLaughlin. In this scene Firestorm gives Darkseid a taste of his own medicine!

Now admittedly, the comic above was published back before Darkseid was THE big bad of the DC Universe. Nowadays, Firestorm probably wouldn’t be able to pull off such a simple stunt against Darkseid. In fact, the next time Firestorm was face-to-face with Darkseid, things went very differently. Below is a scene from Firestorm the Nuclear Man vol III #35 (June 2007) written by Dwayne McDuffie and drawn by Pop Mhan & Steve Bird.

Yeah, that’s right. Darkseid just showed up and literally ripped Firestorm apart. Wow. That’s serious power!

Let’s tally up the two battles… looks like the final scores between Firestorm and Darkseid were: One victory each! I don’t know about you, but I’d gladly accept a tie with Darkseid. Heck, I’d gladly accept just surviving against Darkseid!

Today we’re looking at some fan-created art of Firestorm and Killer Frost!

First up we have Firestorm by Terry Huddleston (Thuddleston on deviantART).

Terry drew this Firestorm back in 2008. While I like this Firestorm, I’m even more impressed with his recent work. Terry has been doing a series of fantastic head-shots and full-body poses of various Marvel and DC characters. Click here for Terry’s DC head-shots and click here for his DC full-body poses. Next up we have Killer Frost by Alessandro (AlexMax on deviantART).
